Snow!

Dear Russia,
We are DM EP CB HP JR BM
In England we are meant to be having snow, tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. It should be very fun. The weather forecast is often wrong, so we aren't getting too excited. If it does snow and it snows a lot, we might get a day off school. When it does snow I have snowball fights and go sleighing . I have a trip up to the ski slope to try on some real snow. I make a snowman and have snowball fights with my sister, we make the most of it because it hardly snows here. I normally have to wear 5 pairs of socks, it is so cold!!! I wear lots of layers and I still get cold!!! We are not used to snow like you are! How do you cope with it? Some people are more used to it than others. The reason we get so excited is that it hasn't snowed here until this January and February. We had THREE days off school then, it was AWESOME!!!

Re: Hello from CB!

Hi,
Me and my mum went to Blackpool and stayed in a hotel near the beach. In the morning on Saturday I did a solo dance in the Winter Gardens. My friend was in the same competition as me and we were both nervous together. When the dance was over I was out of breath. I ran to my mum to get a drink. I was still tired after 10 minutes! The man announced who had got though to the next round, unfortunately I didn't get through but it was a great experience. After I got ready to do a team dance. We were first, Amy did our make-up and finally the moment arrived we danced our very best. In the middle of the dance we got out of time and therefore we came last in the competition. When we had done our dance we went out shopping for make-up. We bought lots and it cost a lot of money. When we went to bed we watched the remembrance of the people who lost their lives fighting at war. After 30 minutes we went to bed and in the morning woke up and had a wonderful breakfast. In the afternoon I did a pairs dance with my dance partner Jess. We did our dance but we didn't get through to the next round. We got on the train to come back home and it took us 4 hours! I had a great time and really enjoyed myself.

Thank you!

Thank you for all of your comments - your English is excellent. I will show all of these comments to my class next week. Well done everyone!

More photographs

It was a very exciting day and we learned a lot about life in the 1940s in Britain.

Some of our photographs from our trip.

We had to look sad because we were pretending that we were being taken out of the cities into the countryside where it would be safer. This meant that we would be leaving our families behind and we didn't know if we would ever see them again!

We had all made gas mask boxes, ID cards and ration books. We had to show these to the staff in the museum.

It was funny because we were allowed to arrest our teacher because she hadn't brought her pretend ID card!

Unfortunately, we had to let Mrs Smith and Mrs Penman go free. We needed them to take us around the rest of the museum!

STEAM Trip

Today we went on a school trip to the STEAM Museum. It was very interesting and we learnt loads about World War Two. We were dressed up as evacuees. We pretended to get evacuated and went on a trip to meet our new mothers. It was good fun but our gas mask boxes and name labels got a bit annoying by the end of today!

Our classroom

This is the wall at the back of our classroom. A boy from a secondary school came in and painted it for us. He is a brilliant artist! This is London and St Paul's cathedral during the Blitz in the Second World War.

Autumn

The trees are still mainly green but some are beginning to get red and yellow colours too.

Science lessons

In Science we are studying light this term. What are you studying?

Harvest Festival

We have had our Harvest Festival celebrations this week. They were fun!
We were celebrating the food that we have and each year we have a guest speaker.
This year the gentleman who came to talk to us was very funny. He had lots of outfits and he kept changing out of one and into another - we all laughed.

He started as a shop keeper (selling bread), then a lorry driver ( to bring bread to the shop), then the miller (milling the wheat to provide flour) , then the farmer ( to grow the wheat). It was all about who we should say thank you to for our bread. The farmer said that he couldn't grow the wheat if there was no sun and we should thank God for the sunshine. It was very clever!

St George is the patron saint of Russia

We have found out an icon of St George.

St George is also the patron saint of Russia and its capital Moscow. On icons he is usually represented sitting on a white horse and killing a big snake.

Students,
Russia

Some information about the patron saint St George

Hello friends in Heron school!
Here is the information about St George. We have found it in the Internet.

Who was St. George, and what did he do to become England’s Patron Saint?
Very little is known about St. George’s life, but it is thought he was a high ranking officer in the Roman army who was killed in around AD 303. It seems that the Emperor Diocletian had St. George tortured to make him deny his faith in Christ. However despite some of the most terrible torture even for that time, St George showed incredible courage and faith and was finally beheaded in Palestine. Stories of his strength and courage soon spread throughout Europe.

The best-known story about St. George is his fight with a dragon, but it is highly unlikely that he ever fought a dragon, and even more unlikely that he ever visited England, however his name was known there as early as the eighth-century. In the Middle Ages the dragon was commonly used to represent the Devil. Unfortunately many legends connected with St. George’s name are fictitious. St. George, so the story goes, killed a dragon on the flat topped Dragon Hill in Uffington, Berkshire, and it is said that no grass grows where the dragon’s blood trickled down!

St George is patron saint not only of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Pomorie, Qormi, Lod and Moscow.
St George is also patron saint of scouts, soldiers, archers, cavalry, farmers and field workers.

The 6 year students,
Russia

Hello to our friends in Russia

Hello everyone!

We are the children in Year 6 at Heron primary School and this is our first week back after the summer holiday. We have just started in Year 6. In July we were still in Year 5.
We have met your tiger and we will be sending you messages about him.

This is the first time that we have been allowed to add messages from home. We have talked about the kind of things we should write. We have also had a talk to our teacher about good manners, accurate punctuation and editing our work.

If we make some mistakes we hope you don't mind too much. When we have written comments our teacher will check them for us.

We hope to get to know you all this year.

In England we are not allowed to put our names beside our photographs and that is a problem. If we put our initials then our teacher can send your teacher a list of names and you might be able to work it out.

Ok - we will write soon. Hope you enjoy writing to us.

Bye!
